Ok we have all been hearing about this free WIFI internet extravaganza that’s going to hit Dublin in September. The idea seemed to be great! well in theory anyway.
So then the whole project gets railroaded by the tel-co’s via the euro commissioner (or so it seems). Yada Yada .. Then yesterday, I see a call from the Dublin chamber of Commerce saying that they want to kick start Dublin with wi-fi on transport. Are they talking about trains and buses?
PS: I love your attempt at the VAT free pc’s lads!
This all leaves me a little bit confused, does anyone know what the hell is going on with this free WI-FI lark??
Talk about a republic of misinformation!

It’s been a very busy month for me. Fear not, Im back!
Coworking Ireland has really taken off over the last month.
We now have 4 active bloggers contributing to the project. Pop over to coworking.ie and take a look at some of the interesting topics being discussed. Don’t forget to subscribe to the Coworking blog.
James Corbett (EirePreneur) reports on Business Class Network looking for locations.
The inside track on Adam Street - Private Members Club in London.
Paul Campbell, Reported from Citzen Space San Francisco!
Irish Independent also got a facelift!
A lot of work went in by the team to get the site up and running. The site migrated fairly smoothly from unison to independent. Personally I don’t see the guardian resemblance with the new indo design.
The layout is much better than the 7 year old design. The site is a lot more accessible and each section now has an RSS feed. Mandatory registration has been removed unlike some other papers.
With a fairly bold move for traditional media, public comments opened up on the site! Make sure to post your feedback on the We Have Changed page. Your opinion is very important, Bad or Good.
LoadzaJobs changed a bit too!
I’m not sure if anyone noticed but Loadzajobs also got some minor cosmetic changes on the front page. The site now has a clearer Featured Recruiters, Popular categories & locations, and a handy list of Industries / Categories down the bottom of the page. I have dug up a snapshot from April of last year to help you compare the changes, Before & After.
More to come next week!

I have been toying with the idea of coworking for some time. For anyone that hasn’t heard of coworking yet, the concept is fairly simple:
“Coworking is a movement to create a community of cafe-like collaboration spaces for developers, writers and independents.
The concept itself is nothing new. Freelancers and small business have always teamed up for office shares. What makes coworking any different to typical office share? In my mind the definition of an office share would be simple “A closed group of people spreading the cost of an office. Whereas coworking is the next evolution of this model.
Think of it this way, what if you could not only spread the cost of your business, but quickly and easily pool resources with a larger community of likeminded individuals? Your office share is limited to a stagnant pool of talent that will rarely change. What if your community was more fluidic? How would that affect your business model?

As you know, search marketing world was on yesterday in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. I must admit, this was an amazing venue to pick for such an event. It had the old school nature of the 17th Century with a strange twist of Modern Art everywhere!
Enough about the venue how was the event? I had really high expectations with the line up of speakers. At the end of the conference I came out a bit let down. The event as a whole seemed to be directed heavily at marketing agencies and potential clients. I understand that this is normally the case in a lot of event of this nature, but at the price of the tickets (€300-500) I really expected something more informative.
The highlight for me was meeting up with some of the guys that are in the real SEO scene in Ireland. Most of them are mainly fresh and up-coming companies, not limited by the boundaries of traditional mediums or practices. I met up with Dave Davis from Redfly, Richard Hearne from Red Cardinal, Alastair McDermot from amdsoft and some of the guys from Infacta. Some truly great banter was going on during and after the event. Dave Davis had what I can only describe as a novel idea.. A drink for a link! So there ye go Dave.
So a quick review of each seminar that I attended…

I have been having a lot of trouble with my home network as of late. The problems all started when I hooked up my new Linksys WRT54GS ap/router about 3 months ago. Like many other I made the purchase over at komplett. I heard great things about the WRT54G but I did all of the usual homework before I made the purchase. At the time, all of the official sources seemed to have gleaming reviews. Maybe I should have looked a bit deeper.
It seems the original versions of the WRT54G (v1, v2, v3) was the cream of the crop allowing owners to hack them to their hearts content. It turns out my Linksys was one of the later editions to the rage (WRT54GS v5.1). What they didn’t say in the reviews was how the WRT54G has devolved into what can only be described as a crippled elderly anorexic snail. The device started out life with 32mb ram and 8mb flash and devolved into its current state with 16mb ram and 2mb flash. Maybe this was for cost saving, power or a change in target market, being honest I don’t really know.
That being said, the router worked OK for a while. Then after about the second month, something strange started happening. My WRT54GS started dropping my wireless connection at random intervals. You can imagine how frustrating this can be!

I don’t want to sound a bit too much like Tom on this one so ill keep it all above board!
Ever since Smart went boombastic on their customers on the phone/broadband front I have been with Magnet Entertainment. Honestly, the only reason I signed up with Magnet was because they provided 4mbs Broadband at good price and would have me moved from smart within two weeks.
Now I must admit Magnet had my broadband connection moved even quicker than I could ever expect! (Even if they did provide me with a ADSL modem with a 2 pin plug and no adapter!) I also had some teething problems regarding speed, this needed a bit of tweaking on Magnets End. I had to call in a few favors to get this bit sorted out!
So that’s where I thought it would end. New provider, some teething problems, everything would work itself out! Turns out, I was wrong!

Well it looks like everyone is just about online again after the phantom SEO hacker blitz. I have been hearing some insane conspiracy theories banging about. They all seem to revolve around the theory that, I was one of the first sites to report and link to the hacker’s site, so I must have done this all as a PR stunt! WRONG!

I have never been a big fan of Dell. However, today I found a post in the Bargain Alerts section over at boards.ie. The Dell Outlet store has some nice deals going at the moment.
I picked up a 3 Ghz Dell Dimension C521, 1GB ram, 160GB Hard drive with a 256MB graphics card for €400. The price also included taxes and shipping and a copy of Windows Media Centre 2005 installed.
Pop over and see of you can find yourself a deal. On a side note it seems Dell have also set up a Dell Outlet ebay store.

CSS Styling for Print and Other Media
“There are many different media types that you can apply to CSS, some of which are more useful than others, and they let you specify the look, feel, or sound of the web page that is linked to the CSS files. In this section, we’ll look at the various media types that are available..”

“There are two important components that can most impact a sales oriented business Web site. Obviously we spend a fair bit of time teaching students how to get the benefit of enormously improved visibility through search engine marketing.”
