Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I have picked a hotel that was recommended by one of the readers. It was a hard decision to make. I was torn between the Silversprings Hotel suggested by Donncha and the Oriel Hotel Cork suggested by frankp. In the end the Oriel won me over. The hotel is slightly more expensive than the Silversprings Hotel Cork however they included breakfast and seemed to be what I was looking for.

The winners are:

€10 euro to Frankp - Oriel
€5 euro to Donncha – Silversprings

Glad we could all help, even if you did spam us just a little bit. Enjoy your stay in the real capital!

I would be more than happy for that 5 Euro to be deposited in your local church or favourite charity’s collection box. They can certainly make better use of it than I would!

ha ha, classic - snap Donncha, I just rooted out this link to Oxfam’s donate online page!

    Great minds and all that!

So Jason, if you could donate my €10 to Oxfam, that’d be great. Failing that, a donation to any charity will keep me happy.

Hope you’re stay in the Oriel goes well! Cork’s great anyway. :D

    Thank You.
You have just done something amazing. By supporting Oxfam Ireland, you’ve decided to help the world’s poorest people.

These are some of the areas Oxfam are currently focusing on……

Oxfam’s emergency teams are working around the clock to bring clean drinking water and essential supplies to thousands of people made homeless by the Yogyakarta earthquake on May 27th. Oxfam, which has been working in Yogyakarta for 10 years, were on hand to deliver 12,000 liters of clean water and install two water tanks and two water bladders at two hospitals; so far we have also distributed 2,434 tarpaulins, each with the capacity to shelter 5-8 people, distributed 950 hygiene kits and 4,900 sarongs for use either as clothing or for covering the dead, and delivered a generator to provide electricity to a coordination center.

The situation in Kenya is worse than it has been for many years. 3.5 million lives are on the line due to on going drought. At present all Oxfam personnel in Kenya have dropped everything else to concentrate on meeting humanitarian needs. Oxfam Ireland is providing funding in both the north of the country and also in Kajiado in the south where we are working directly with our partner, MPIDO, a Massai land-rights group, to meet immediate food needs.

As well as working in the areas mentioned above, Oxfam Ireland is also continuing to expand our work with HIV/AIDS. Our main partner, Tanga AIDS Working Group, are using traditional herbal remedies widely as the very expensive Western drugs remain in very short supply. There is no doubt that the traditional medicines do benefit AIDS sufferers considerably by fending off infections that their own immune systems cannot cope with. This not only reduces discomfort but also sustains patients’ strength, energy, and ability to cope with day-to-day living. We are also continuing our public education programmes to reduce the spread of the AIDS virus, as well as caring for orphans and those in the final stages of life.

None of this vital work would be possible without the ongoing generosity of people like you.

Nice one Jason. I decided to match that €15 myself, so now €30 has been donated in all, and I’m encouraging anyone I can to donate between €5 and €15 this Friday afternoon to Oxfam Ireland - see here for details!
