Coworking in Ireland

April 3rd, 2007 by Jason Roe

I have been toying with the idea of coworking for some time. For anyone that hasn’t heard of coworking yet, the concept is fairly simple:

“Coworking is a movement to create a community of cafe-like collaboration spaces for developers, writers and independents”

The concept itself is nothing new. Freelancers and small business have always teamed up for office shares. What makes coworking any different to typical office share? In my mind the definition of an office share would be simple “A closed group of people spreading the cost of an office”. Whereas coworking is the next evolution of this model.

Think of it this way, what if you could not only spread the cost of your business, but quickly and easily pool resources with a larger community of likeminded individuals? Your office share is limited to a stagnant pool of talent that will rarely change. What if your community was more fluidic? How would that affect your business model?

Style of Writing

March 22nd, 2007 by Jason Roe

I would like to clear up a few things regarding how people might perceive my style of writing. Most people who read this blog are first time visitors and come direct from search engines or via other Irish blogs and forums. As such, most of you have never met me in person or have talked to me outside of this medium.

A a few people have said to me that my style of writing can sound uptight, aggressive and at times makes me sound like a bit of a stuck up tit. Anyone that has met me in person knows that is really not the case. I can be opinionated about what I know, but in many cases I would be far from vocal about those opinions.

Its funny how people perceive a style of writing. Some might say my style is assertive and borderlines on aggressive depending on my mood. But at the end of the day it doesn’t really reflect who I am. I find that quite a scary thought. Read the rest of this entry »

Search Marketing world in review

March 22nd, 2007 by Jason Roe

As you know, search marketing world was on yesterday in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. I must admit, this was an amazing venue to pick for such an event. It had the old school nature of the 17th Century with a strange twist of Modern Art everywhere!

Enough about the venue how was the event? I had really high expectations with the line up of speakers. At the end of the conference I came out a bit let down. The event as a whole seemed to be directed heavily at marketing agencies and potential clients. I understand that this is normally the case in a lot of event of this nature, but at the price of the tickets (€300-500) I really expected something more informative. Read the rest of this entry »

Linksys WRT54GS Hanging or Crashing? Try DD-WRT

March 15th, 2007 by Jason Roe

I have been having a lot of trouble with my home network as of late. The problems all started when I hooked up my new Linksys WRT54GS ap/router about 3 months ago. I heard great things about the WRT54G but I did all of the usual homework before I made the purchase. At the time, all of the official sources seemed to have gleaming reviews. Maybe I should have looked a bit deeper.

It seems the original versions of the WRT54G (v1, v2, v3) was the cream of the crop allowing owners to hack them to their hearts content. It turns out my Linksys was one of the later editions to the rage (WRT54GS v5.1). What they didn’t say in the reviews was how the WRT54G has devolved into what can only be described as a crippled elderly anorexic snail. The device started out life with 32mb ram and 8mb flash and devolved into its current state with 16mb ram and 2mb flash. Maybe this was for cost saving, power or a change in target market, being honest I don’t really know.

That being said, the router worked OK for a while. Then after about the second month, something strange started happening. My WRT54GS started dropping my wireless connection at random intervals. You can imagine how frustrating this can be!

Magnet Entertainment Support Email / Phone

January 30th, 2007 by Jason Roe

I don’t want to sound a bit too much like Tom on this one so ill keep it all above board!

Ever since Smart went boombastic on their customers on the phone/broadband front I have been with Magnet Entertainment. Honestly, the only reason I signed up with Magnet was because they provided 4mbs Broadband at good price and would have me moved from smart within two weeks.

Magnet EntertainmentNow I must admit Magnet had my broadband connection moved even quicker than I could ever expect! (Even if they did provide me with a ADSL modem with a 2 pin plug and no adapter!) I also had some teething problems regarding speed, this needed a bit of tweaking on Magnets End. I had to call in a few favors to get this bit sorted out!

So that’s where I thought it would end. New provider, some teething problems, everything would work itself out! Turns out, I was wrong!
